Fiber Optics

Fiber Optic monitoring solutions backed by knowledgeable advice, detailed project planning, and successful installation.

Premium Optical Downhole Monitoring

As we often say, you can’t manage what you dont measure. The investment in Fiber Optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) means increased data resolution leading to greater insight into completion and production performance

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS)

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) utilizes single mode Fiber Optic cables to measure acoustic data. This can be useful for detecting a number of characteristics relevant to well production and pipeline integrity.

Distrubuted Temperature Sensing (DTS)

Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) utilizes multi-mode Fiber Optic cables to measure distributed temperature data. This generates a continuous temperature profile along the length of the cable.

Installation Expertise Matters

Fiber Optic monitoring installations are notoriously complex. It is important to select the right team that recommends the right completion equipment, has talented field technicians, and access to a wide assortment of technologies.

Biography

“In my function as Applications Engineer with GEO PSI, I will be working to grow our fiber optic installations and capabilities. I have worked on over 30 fiber optic installations cemented in on casing in mostly horizontal wells the various basins around the US including the Marcellus, DJ, Permian, Eagle Ford as well as installations in Canada and Australia.

These installs go back to the early days of installing bare tube on casing and then being instrumental in the development and construction of fiber optic flat pack cables to better protect the cable during the installation process and to survive the frac. Fiber projects require excellent communication between the project manager and the clients drilling, completions and IT groups. I will be your trusted advisor for this process. Installation of the fiber cable is only half of the job. Delivering data to you as the client, is the other half of the job.

I began my career as a Formation Evaluation Measurement While Drilling (FEMWD) engineer with Sperry-Sun Drilling Services, Project Manager with Landmark Graphic Drilling and Completions Practice Group supporting the drilling engineering applications, Principal Project manager with Pinnacle/Halliburton focusing on fiber optic services, Application Engineer with WellDog focusing on fiber optic services, MWD Engineer with Cathedral Energy Services.”

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS)

Utilizing single mode Fiber Optic cables, Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) provides quality downhole vibration data and is applicable in a wide variety of applications.

How It Works

A Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) interrogator is connected to the fiber and uses a laser to send thousands of short pulses of light along the fiber every second.

A small proportion of the light travelling in the fiber strand is reflected back by the process known as Rayleigh Backscatter.

Vibrations from the surrounding environment will disturb the light in the fiber and be observed by the DAS interrogator. This provides operators with detailed vibration and acoustic data long the entire length of the fiber strand.

Applications

While Fiber Optic DAS is a proven monitoring solution, operators are still innovating new applications across a number of industries.

Some of the most common applications include:

  • Seismic Interpretation
  • Leak Detection
  • Hydraulic Frac Monitoring
  • Production Zonal Monitoring

Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS)

Utilizing Multi-mode Fiber Optic cables, Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) provides quality downhole temperature data and is applicable in a wide variety of applications.

How It Works

A Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) interrogator is connected to a multi-mode optical fiber that uses a laser to send thousands of short pulses of light down the fiber every second.

The light that is reflected back is observed by the interrogator which then generates a continuous temperature profile along the length of the cable courtesy of the Raman effect. This detailed distributed temperature data provides operators with valuable insight into the temperature profile along the entire length of the cable.

Applications

While Fiber Optic DTS is a proven monitoring solution, operators are still innovating new applications across a number of industries.

Some of the most common applications include:

  • Wellbore Performance Monitoring
  • Wellbore Integrity Monitoring & Leak Detection
  • Gas Lift Profiling
  • Cement Quality Monitoring
